Looking to the Future
Tug Fork Watershed Based Plan
We are proud to announce that Downstream Strategies has been contracted to create a Tug Fork River Watershed Based Plan for McDowell and Mingo Counties in West Virginia.
A Watershed Based Plan is required so that funding can be made available to begin to remediate water quality issues in the Tug Fork's tributaries.
Solutions for the Future
On March 24, 2023 the Ohio River Basin Alliance (ORBA) and National Wildlife Federation (NWF) came to Williamson for an open discussion of local concerns and solutions for the Tug Fork River. ORBA hopes to bring federal government attention and funding to the Ohio River Basin. They traveled to local communities to conduct listening sessions throughout the region. Residents from the Tug Fork Watershed were able to share their priorities, concerns, and visions for the future.
Findings from the 31 various listening sessions from 14 different states have been compiled and published. Residents are concerned about environment, infrastructure, land use, pollution, water quality, and much more. Additionally, residents offered solutions and remedies such as environmental regulations, community engagement, increased funding, habitat restoration, education, and much more! The complete results are available here.
